Children have much to gain if they learn a programming language at a young age. A standard programming environment can be considered boring and it will never catch a child's attention. RoboMind is based on the same principle as other programming languages, but a student can use a small set of instructions and conditions to command a robot on a map. Instead of displaying dull numbers or other text-based results, something actually happens when you create a program, which is much more entertaining.

RoboMind's setup file is 35 and a half MB and it can be installed in a few moments, without any difficulties. The software is designed for educational purposes, but if you intend to use it at home, for personal reasons, you don't have to buy a license.

The interface has a modern and simple design and it is very easy to use. This allows a user to focus on programming the robot, instead of looking around for a specific option. The robot can be found on a map, on which you can zoom and pan. Interacting with the robot directly, using the mouse, is not possible. You must type a series of simple commands, in separate lines, next to the map.

Although the ROBO programming language is much easier than others, you can still use a large variety of instructions, from basic orientation and movement commands to if-else conditions or repetitive structures. It is also possible to instruct the robot to perform certain actions, like picking up or dropping an object, painting its path with black or white colors and more. Furthermore, you can set it to verify its surroundings. The robot can check, in different directions, if the path is clear or blocked, if it's colored white or black and so on. You may create numerous challenges if you combine these commands with if-else conditions or repeat instructions. For example, you can make the robot follow a white or black path, to find another path if the current one is blocked and much more.

If you don't know what commands to use for certain situations, you can bring up a remote control, to move the robot and make it paint, pick up or drop objects, by clicking different buttons. When you click a button, to issue a command, the corresponding text-based instruction will appear on the remote control. Alternatively, you can hit the Insert button, located on the Edit tab, and select an instruction from a menu. RoboMind comes with a series of sample programs, as well as additional maps, on which you may create various challenges. A very interesting and useful feature is the possibility of exporting programs in NXT format and use them on real-life LEGO Mindstorms robots.

Pros

RoboMind makes programming more interesting for younger students. By using a simplified programming language, a child can make a robot move and perform various actions. The programming language is similar to advanced ones, but easier to understand. A child can learn the basics of programming and how to solve a problem in a logical manner.

Cons

There are no disadvantages to mention. RoboMind allows young students to learn the basic principles of a programming language and have fun at the same time.
